In Leonardo's day, wind instruments could only be as long as the span of two human hands. This limited the sound that could be produced to relatively high notes. Leonardo designed a set of keys attached by wires to pads that would close the holes of the instrument. This system allowed the player to expand his reach and to play lower notes.
